Veneer Cupboards – Can you refinish veneer cabinets?

Before you can refinish veneer cabinets, you must strip off the old finish.

Veneers are generally very thin, so sanding off the old finish can damage them beyond repair.

A very light sanding with 120-grit to 180-grit sandpaper will open the grain on the veneer.

So it takes the stain or paint better.

Why is wood veneer so expensive?

It is only cheaper because the cost of the particular wood used in plywood is cheaper than that of the veneer.

Veneers basically are made out of different types of wood species such as:

• Oakwood
• Walnut
• Teak
• Maple etc.

Whose rates are bit higher than that of the wood used to make a plywood.

Can you paint wood veneer cabinets?

You can sand, prime and paint laminate as if it were a solid wood piece of furniture!

Because it’s often somewhat glossy-looking, and important to sand it down until the finish is very dull before priming.

We recommend using 120 grit sandpaper for this.

How do I know if I have veneer or laminate?

If there is a veneer, you will be able to look at it from the side and see where the sheet of veneer attaches to the front of the piece.

Also, if you see unfinished wood underneath the furniture, it’s probably wood and not laminate.

Which tends to cover the furniture from top to bottom.

How can you tell if wood is veneer?

Look at the underside of the piece.

Does it look like the same wood to you as on top?

If not, then most probably it is veneered.

In solid wood pieces, the wood will look the same in both visible and hidden parts.

(or almost the same as the better part of a board is usually turned out)
